Hi Friend

In Hi Friend, Jess Hilliard unpacks the strange, tender, and absurd, drawing us into a world where train rides become odysseys, fleeting encounters hum with mystery, and the small details of life—coffee cups, stray pennies, the hum of fluorescent lights—take on the weight of myth. With Chris Johanson’s restless, evocative drawings woven into the text, this book becomes something richer, stranger, and more alive. Funny, poignant, and endlessly surprising, Hi Friend transforms the ordinary into something close to magic.

The 156-page paperback book was edited by Harrell Fletcher and features 13 drawings by Johanson. Originally published in 2000 in a very limited edition, this new version includes an updated introduction by Fletcher as well as the original.
